Here are the top 6 factors that drive cost:
1. LAYOUT AND AGE OF HOME
Basements serve as extensions of homes where families play and engage. Plumbing or structural elements may need to be moved to achieve the desired function. Costs may be higher as a result. Additionally to budget, there are other factors to consider, such as age, water intrusion, radon, and uneven concrete.
2. BASEMENT FEATURES
Prices will vary according to the cabinets, wet bars, backsplashes, and appliances. Having a fireplace in your basement will make your home the most cozy. Make sure you budget for stone, a mantel, a gas line, and power.
3. SPECIALTY ROOMS
If you decide to finish your basement in the future, our team can add unique rooms, such as wine cellars, home gyms, and crafting rooms. We design and build the space specifically for you. The cost of these specialty spaces will depend on the degree of customization, including materials, equipment, finishes, plumbing, and electrical.
4. BATHROOMS
Adding a bathroom to your basement will make it more convenient, complete, and luxurious. The cost of bathrooms is certain to increase since they require water and electricity. The extent of your basement’s plumbing can affect the cost, so make sure you know the amount of water present.
5. ELECTRICAL AND APPLIANCES
If you add appliances such as a kegerator, pizza oven, and microwave to your basement, you can impress your guests and make the space more convenient. Mechanical upgrades required to power new appliances are often overlooked as part of the cost of new appliances. Let us help you figure out what they will cost.
6. EGRESS WINDOWS & CODE COMPLIANCE
Basements must have two points of egress, and if there aren’t two, the cost will increase. As the name suggests, an Egress window is a window that can be opened in case of an emergency. Aside from providing natural light and ventilation, egress windows can also make a space feel more comfortable by adding natural light.

Costs may escalate as a result. Budget is not the only factor to consider; other factors like age, water intrusion, radon, and uneven concrete need to be taken into account as well.
2. BASEMENT FEATURES
It is important to keep in mind that prices for appliances, cabinets, wet bars, and backsplashes will all vary. It is true that if you have a fireplace in your basement, it will be the coziest place in your home. Be sure to consider the following factors when budgeting for your basement fireplace.

What Makes A Historic Home?

Historically significant home remodels may be more expensive and take longer to complete because they are more custom. Learn how historic remodel prices are calculated.

THE TOP 6 FACTORS THAT DRIVE COST
1. BRINGING YOUR HOME TO CODE
Historic homes typically increase in value throughout every aspect of the project, whether because the conditions are extremely old or because existing remodeling items weren’t completed correctly. It is difficult and can involve extra steps to bring an older house up to code which would not be necessary in a modern home. Aside from adding egress windows, adjusting ceiling heights, and rewiring the house, you can also add insulation throughout the house.
2. SPECIALTY TRADES
The city of Minneapolis requires special licensing for plumbers and HVAC contractors who work with historic homes. Because of their expertise and the complexity of working in a historic house, these trades are usually more expensive.
3. CEILING HEIGHTS
In most cities, especially in basements, a 7′ ceiling height is the minimum. Construction will not be allowed in some cities unless you can reach this ceiling height, which usually requires digging down or moving pipes that cause low ceilings.
4. UPGRADING MECHANICS & ELECTRICAL
To bring a historic home up to code, its plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems must be updated. The house may need to be rewired, electrical wiring cleaned up, plumbing added, and a subpanel installed.
5. LEAD & ASBESTOS
In order to create a safe environment, we test all of our construction and living projects for lead and asbestos. Lead and asbestos are commonly found in historic homes. Lead is most likely to be found in homes built before 1978, while asbestos may be found in modern homes. These issues can result in significant expenses for the homeowner.
6. FLOORING
Many older homes require brand new floors that require a more involved process than simply replacing the existing floors. The floors of most historic homes need to be leveled, and waterproofing and drain tiles need to be installed, both of which can be very expensive.
