2021 Home Remodel Design Trends

As we all know, 2020 was the year of working from home, bringing what you love home to you, and spending more time indoors with the family.

Now that we’re several months into 2021, we’re still seeing projects come from those practical remodel needs over the last year, as well as a softer, warmer design style that conveys a welcoming feel to guests and family.

Without further ado, here’s what our FBC designers see trending in 2021!

What’s Trending in 2021?

Lyndsay Bussler, Design Leader, Minnesota

Warmer tones are making a comeback! Mixing warmer colors with greys and white to create a cozy and inviting space is something we’re seeing more and more of. Our clients are embracing raw, natural woods in their remodels — in flooring, kitchen islands, and beams. A mix of subtle textures and finishes (like walnut and rift-cut oak) has also become popular. Mixed cabinets, too!

Erin Boedeker and Sara Hugo, Senior Designers, Colorado

The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a lot of changes in the home, like spending more time indoors and working and exercising from home.

We’re seeing remodel projects like private gyms, home offices, and basement finishes to create a better fit and function for the family. Additional living and recreation spaces, like new bedrooms, game rooms, and home theaters, are also trending in 2021.

We’re expecting to see more home projects built around community and family as we transition into a more “post-COVID life” as the year progresses. Open concept kitchens that fit family and friends, wine cellars, bars, and entertainment spaces are expected to make a comeback!

Wainscoting, molding, and wallpaper are back in! Homeowners are wanting their finished space to feel “decorated”, even before they add furniture and decor. By adding textures, your home takes on a rich depth that will invite family and friends to stay a while.

Soft, light palates are popular right now, also giving a welcoming feel for family and friends. We’re also seeing more and more fireplaces and built-ins.

The trends are in the details! For whole home remodels, we’re seeing the need for a “refresh” — updating outdated items, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry, paint colors, and more. Design elements that are on-trend in 2021 include trim accent walls as focal points, large plank wood flooring, and rich paint colors at accent walls.

Biophilic design is also popular right now. Biophilic design is the incorporation of plants and nature into a space. This means, when designing, there need to be placements for plants and access to sunlight!
