What is a Whole-Home Remodel?

In contrast to a kitchen or bath remodel, a whole-home remodel covers multiple rooms in your home. Typically, a whole-home remodel means renovating an entire floor of your house, if not the house as a whole. When it comes to a remodel, we specifically service structural changes and updates to space planning; a more cosmetic remodel focused on flooring or paint updates with less focus on overall design may be a better fit for a general contractor. When remodeling the main floor, that may include updating your kitchen, a mudroom, bathrooms, living space, and more!

Customer Reviews

FBC Remodel is proud to Build Joy® for homeowners. See what our customers have to say about working with us.

“The design/construction approach by FBC produced an excellent finished product for us. We added a large recreation room for pool, TV and games along with a bedroom and bathroom. Ceiling soffits, arched entries and angled walls created a unique and inviting space. The project team and trade partners did fine work and we are very happy with our new basement. All work was completed on schedule and within budget. The best part was having all construction access through the basement window. Our only advice is to carefully review all design details to assure that everything you want is clearly specified in the drawings. Then be part of the team by doing quality control as the project moves along.”

“FBC did an amazing job with our 1600 sq ft basement. The sales team listened to our vision, offered several options and helped us stay within budget. Our PM was fantastic! We received daily communication with minimal life interruption, realistic expectations and partnered with us to ensure every aspect was covered. They even finished early!!! We had met with 2 other contractors and are so happy about our choice! They accommodated our quirky requests for a brewery room, rerouting our laundry dryer vent, closeting our water piping for access and exterior window well changes. Best choice ever!!!”

“We can't say enough about the design team at FBC. We had multiple companies bid on our project and everyone else came back with the same basic design (a good but not spectacular layout). But FBC looked at the space from a completely different angle and in the process was able to create everything on our wishlist including an extra room. The design was elegant and functional and our family now benefits from it every day.”

Home Remodeling Planning

Any time you are remodeling a space, you want to get the most out of it and come away with a beautiful and functional space. We recommend taking a considerable amount of time to think through your remodel and determine your exact needs and wants with a whole-home remodel. Figure out what is non-negotiable for your space and where you are willing to be flexible. Consider these topics before meeting with your designer so you can come into your consultation with strong foundational ideas for the outcome of your remodel.

YOUR HOME REMODEL GOALS

The first thing to consider is what your overall goal for the space is. Do all of your finishes need to be updated, or are you more focused on restructuring the overall layout? What is or isn't working for you right now? How could your home be improved to make your life better?

To create a genuinely impactful home remodel, consider how your home could better serve you and your lifestyle. Take time to think about what you love about your current home and what isn't quite working for you. Does your home fit with your entertaining goals? Is your family craving more functional space like an office or a mudroom to make life easier? Do you have all of the living spaces you need to support your lifestyle? These considerations will help you decide exactly what you need to accomplish with your remodel.

THE REMODEL PROCESS

With a whole-home remodel, you may be required to move out for the duration of the remodeling process. Moving will not be an issue if you have another floor or a basement that your family can temporarily reside in during your remodel. However, if you cannot live in your home during the remodel, you will need to factor in the cost of a temporary living situation.

There is an option to complete your remodel in phases. However, this option will result in a higher cost overall, while completing the remodel all at once will be more cost-efficient. Sometimes moving out is not a possibility. If you cannot move out during your whole home remodel, you may want to consider remodeling a single floor at a time to create the highest possibility for living in your home during the remodel.

ADDING SPACE VS. REPURPOSING

When you think about remodeling your home, your first thought may be to add on space. However, this isn't always the most efficient option. Think about your current area, are there spaces in your home that aren't being used to their full potential?

Don't let the current structure of your home hold you back from imagining what it could be. Remember, walls can generally be moved, resulting in more open (or closed off) spaces. Think about how the rooms are currently being used and what you actually need to make your home more functional for you and your family. Your designer will walk with you through your home and help you identify the potential of your space, but having an idea of what you're looking for ahead of time is a great starting point.

Specialty Spaces for Your Home Remodel

Specialty spaces can increase the functionality of your home. Think about what areas you could add to help you and your family move through the day easier. Some common specialty rooms include:

To help you decide on a specialty space, think about what you don’t have now that adding would make your daily life more functional. What is something that you’re missing that would transform your entire home? Can you transition any unused rooms or areas into a specialty room.

Home Remodel Construction Timeline

Every home remodel is different and because of the custom nature of our projects, we can never make guarantees without first seeing your space. However, on average, whole-home remodel projects take about three to three and a half months to complete construction. The less structural change in your project, the less time it will take to complete.

Whole Home Remodel Cost

At FBC Remodel, every remodeling project is custom, from the design to the scope of work. This means there is no set pricing. However, whole home remodels typically start at $120,000 and can go up to $450,000. Pricing is dependent on your scope of work, the restructuring needed, and the finishes you choose for your space. Check out our pricing page for more information about whole home remodel pricing.
